![]() ![]() We only wanted lakes that did not allow boat motors so we had no loud motors scaring off any possible wildlife. Well, my husband and I have made the trip up north 3 times and every single time, we got a permit for a different lake each time, and we portaged at each lake as well. We would definitely hire him again.īottom line: we'd probably go with them again based on price and convenience, but it is true that a lower price does come with a few rough edges. Great with kids, patient with adults, didn't mind rowing repeatedly all around the same lake trying to find those stupid hiding walleye (never did catch one, not his fault). Our particular guide, Scott Wilkinson, was excellent and is certainly someone you could request if you went that route. A pair of hands that really knows the weather patterns and the routes saves tons of time and makes a big difference when you're trying to pitch a tent in the rain (see above). If you have young kids or a group that isn't already very wilderness savvy, that is the way to go. Those issues really didn't affect our trip because we made the decision to add a guide. It is not fun to be figuring things out for the first time in the rain. One piece of advice: take your tents, stoves, and any other gear they give you and practice using it before you leave the property. I definitely was hoping for a little more orientation to canoeing for the newbies in our group. I felt like if I hadn't been constantly speaking up for our group, we would have taken twice as long and wouldn't have received our full set of information. The focus was more on making sure we watched a mandatory video. With multiple groups arriving at once, nobody really gives you an individual walk through the process. All was fixed when I asked, with no hassle, but keep an eye on your documents and double check everything.Ĭheck in was a little hectic and maybe the roughest part of it all. The first canoe they offered us had a hole on the bottom. Our initial gear set was missing some options I'd paid for. We had random issues with billing, the first invoice they sent was off by $250+. Some of that may have been benefit from our guide who provided suggestions. ![]() Food was of good quality and plentiful, we ate heartily and had plenty left over. Our gear was in general in good condition, with a hole in one tent screen that was easily patched with duct tape, which they provide. Service was mostly solid with a few spots. They have a two adults/two kids family deal that worked out well for us. So really, they're competing on price and service. I cannot overemphasize how highly we valued Boundary Waters Outfitters being a part of our canoeing adventure.Īs far as we can tell, all the outfitters rent the same canoes, and a paddle is a paddle. You can be sure you will have a magnificent time and be well prepared for your canoeing journey. The lodge is gorgeous and their gear is top notch. We shared many emails and phone calls and they helped us make wise choices that made our trip truly "the trip of a lifetime". We returned to the Boundary Waters Outfitters lodge the following Saturday to a hot shower and a long drive home.ĭuring the planning phase of the trip the guys at Boundary Waters Outfitters were invaluable. The sunsets were postcard worthy and the water was often so clear you could see a dime at the bottom of 15 feet of water. We saw eagles, loons, ducks, grouse and beavers but missed out on moose and bears. We spent 6 nights and 7 days in some of the most pristine wilderness available to man. We had been planning this trip for over a year and it had finally arrived. Then we took off in 8 canoes (two treks as the park is limited to 4 canoes or 9 people in a group) heading out into some of the most beautiful country on this Earth. We arrived at the entry point and all gathered together for the traditional pictures. We woke Sunday morning to a nice breakfast and we all piled into two vans with our gear for the trip of a lifetime. We reviewed our trip and gear and then went to bet in their bunkhouse. We arrived on Saturday evening May 23rd and the guys at Boundary Waters Outfitters were magnificent. In May of 2015 we organized a Boy Scout high adventure trip to the Boundary Waters for 11 scouts and 6 adults. ![]()
